Radio script and vox pop interviews 5.2.1, 5.2.2

To make our interview we started thinking about relative and current questions that we could ask students around the college. We need to think carefully about what we were asking so that the questions were “open”, which means that the interviewee has more that one thing to say about the topic and they can put there opinions across. They don’t leave the us with a one word answer which is way to short for the vox pop. The group took turns in using to the microphone so we could all have a go.

Some of the problems we had to over come was the environment. By this I mean the background noise, with people around the collage making sound it sometimes put the interviewee off or it was just to loud and the microphone would pick it up. So when this happened to us we had to think of a good place in the college that was quiet and didn’t have much human activety because we want to make the sound seem crips and clean. Another problem we had to overcome was with the interviewee themselves, it can be quit intimidating to answer a random persons question. We had to make them feel confutable which we did by talking to them first about the question before we even turned on the microphone. Even though we did this there were sometime laughing so we just had to stay calm and carry on. One of the last problem that I had to over come was Actually approaching people of all different ages around the college, because sometimes it can be slightly intimidating. The last problem was actually when it came to uploading and saving our work and because we were in a PC room we didn’t have the software to be able to do that. So we had to move in to a MAC room and even then there were some further problems, the internet was down so we had to save all our work on to a memory stick as a back up so that we knew it was saved.

Some of the key rules when writing a radio script is the 5w’s. these are; WHO, WHAT, WERE, WHEN and WHY. This is so you can get all the information that your views\listeners want to here in such a small space of time and space. You have to keep it short and snappy so that you don’t loose the interest of people. Another thing is that you don’t want to use complicated words so when you do come to recording it you don’t slip up on the long words because when you do your just wasting time. You want to keep the punctuation simple because adding lots can make your script hard to read and it could slow it down to much. Lastly you should avoid abbreviations because not everyone knows and understands them also its not clear and that could be bad for a radio script.

After writing my script me and a partner swapped work so we could give each other feedback on the work we had done. One of the things i had to change was in my iPhone 7 piece, which was that my opening sentence was structured like a headline and needed something adding to it to make sense for a radio bulletin. My partner then went on to say that both of my pieces were “short and snappy” and that they both “covered the 5w’s.”

7.1.1 Issues related to internet use

Issues related to internet usage –

  • WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MAIN ISSUES (AREAS OF CONCERN) RELATED TO GENERAL INTERNET USAGE?
  • 1 – Addiction – in the UK 2 in 5 of us recognise that we are spending too much time on the internet but admin we can’t stop. 3 in 5 of us check the internet the first thing in a morning and the last thing at night and put this before interpersonal communication.
  • 2 – We know too much but understand too little, there is so much data out there that we can never see it all, search engines put the things they want us to see first, like promotions and there partners information.
  • 3 – Privacy, thousands of cookies track us were every we go and then our mobiles log data. Every year we leave about £5000 worth of internet online.
  • 4 – Online crime, on twitter 10000 users of racist slur terms per day, and 69% of young people in the uk have experience cyber bulling

SOCIAL MEDIA –

STUDY THE STATISTICS BELOW FOR FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM USAGE.

  • FACEBOOK Statistics –
  • 01 billion daily active users on average for September 2015
  • 894 million mobile daily active users on average for September 2015
  • Approximately 83.5% of our daily active users are outside the US and Canada

INSTAGRAM Statistics –

7.1.1 Website analysis

Here i will be looking to compare two  websites and to analysis them.

  • APPLE – The purpose of this website is to be a retail and promotion site. Apple was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne on April 1, 1976. The target audience as a demographic profile would be, both genders, ABC1’s because it is a expensive product, and its a world wide. The physchographic profiling would be, i high lifestyle with a technology interest. The content on the site includes all there products and upcoming events and they have images of there products to further bring you in. The features on the site include, slide shows and videos to promote. The style of the website has a modern layout and colour, coming from the white background and the vivid colours coming from the products in the images. The language is formal because they want to be professional.

Analysis of contrasting website.

  • Cosmo – žPurpose- Inform and Entertain. žTarget Audience would be this 16- 40 and they would stereotypical Female and they social status would be C2’sDE. It is a World Wide organisation so it doesn’t have a specific location of interest. It is typically geared towards Working Class Women. The Interests include: Entertainment, Beauty, Love and Sex, Fashion, Work life. It targets the audience by using informal language which is colloquial so it fits in to the people reading it. There is lots of images to keep you interested, and also lots of the colour pink. Again a stereotypical view of women liking pink. There are topics that mainly women would like to read about. It has a modern layout which is well navigated. It speaks in second person so it feels like the information is directed to you personally.

6.1.1 Investigating visual production and technology

In accordance to the Ofcom guidelines what considerations would you have to think about before producing a programme to an under 18 audience?

  • According to Ofcom “Material that might seriously impair the physical, mental or moral development of people under eighteen must not be broadcast” (ND)
  • We have to be aware that the viewers and listeners make a distinction between channels which appeal to wide ranging audience because people watch and listener to more that one thing including children.
  • Although the smaller, niche audience, unlikely to appeal to children.
  • Although broadcasters of these niche channels still carry a responsibility towards a potential child audience, the majority of homes do not contain children and viewers and listeners have a right to expect a range of material.
  • We have to take in consideration a visual material towards under 18, when it comes to sexual material Ofcom states “There are certain statutory provisions in force which already prohibit direct identification of those who are not yet adult”
  • How Violence and dangerous behaviour is allowed on TV and radio, Areas of

Concern include:

“• the use of accessible domestic implements, such as knives, or other offensive weapons, articles or substances portrayed in a dangerous or harmful manner

  • Any portrayal of household items, such as micro-waves and tumble-dryers, which can cause harm if misused,
  • Certain locations, such as railway lines;
  • Certain material which may lead children to fail to recognise potentially dangerous play especially if there is no serious outcome; and
  • Hanging or the preparations for hanging, if easily imitable, particularly if shown before the watershed, unless the setting gives strong grounds for believing that imitation is unlikely.”
  • Ofcom also states when I comes to language “Offensive language is a feature of British life and, in certain contexts, it has an appropriate place in broadcasting. However it raises concerns about harm to children and offence in general. There is a concern that children may imitate offensive language or be upset to hear this language, when their parents or carers have told them it is wrong, before they have worked out their own attitude to its use.” And also
  • “Abusive language relating to age, disability, gender, race, religion, beliefs and sexual orientation can be deeply offensive. Adverse reaction to the use of this language has increased over the past years. The level of offence can change as language acquires new meanings, for instance when mainstream culture adopts language from a minority group. Children enjoy a wide variety of music. However, where lyrics in songs might cause offence, broadcasters will wish to consider the context which may increase or mitigate the offence, and the possible use of track remixes and edits.

http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/broadcasting/broadcast-codes/broadcast-code-september-2010/protecting-under-18s/

When it comes to legal regulations –

Copyright- There could have been some issues with the copyright law when it comes to using images for our visual video and because of the law in place which clearly says that you would have to give some assets to the original owner we have had to produce and shoot out own photos for the video but because it is for educational purposes there would have been some flexibility and because it isn’t intended on financial gain.

Defamation – I had to be careful when writing my script and talking because when following the defamation law you can’t: lower the person in the minds of right-thinking members of society, injures the person’s job reputation, causes a person to be shunned or avoided, and exposes a person to hatred or ridicule. So when speaking quotes they had to be correct to the words of the interviewee.

Editors code – because I had to make the video suitable for people under the age of 18 there were some rules you had to follow which is covered by the editor’s code. I had to make sure that the material that I was producing wouldn’t physically, mentally or morally harm people who were under the age of 18 as this would be against the ethical code.

7.2.1 Website Planning

Here are my 4 plans for creating my own website. In the first one as you can see i have taken the inspiration from the site i found on Awwwards which is a film reel which when you as a piece of information it add a film content to the reel. When you start to add more and more content to the reel, you will be able to interact with the reel and you will be able to move the wheel to get to the content. This idea is an unconventional concept which means it doesn’t follow a normal pattern. This idea would be great if i was just posting film blogs because it is a “film reel” but i wouldn’t be just posting them things so i wouldn’t want to turn people about because they thought it was a fully film site.

In the next design is another unconventional concept which consist of a tree or plant and this will be the home screen, when hovering then over a branch or leaf it will zoom in and then take you to the information been stored on that branch. then every time a new piece of information is been put on to the site a new branch will be added to the tree. The tree will either be a cartoon tree or a realistic version of that. The idea is that as time goes on the tree will become larger and the branches fuller meaning it hold more information and becomes more and more knowledgable.

My third design is yet again a unconventional concept, the reason is i think these concepts are more original and personal to the individual created,  it is an image of the side of a plane which may seem odd but the idea is there. When looking at the plane all the window shutters are down and when moving your mouse over them the shutters raise and then allow you to click though to the information. This idea would be great if i was always writhing about travel and holidays, as with the film reel idea, but I’m not just writing about one thing. It could be something different every week so i don’t want people coming to the site and seeing the home page and clicking off because they thing its dedicated to one subject when its not.

My final design is a conventional concept in the style of masonry. The reason for this is because it looks current and modern with what we have now in the website word, with pintrest and tumbler already using these layouts. The idea is to have a wall of doors that can be scrolled right and left, because of the amount of content that may be added in the future. The idea is that when the curser of the mouse hovers overt the door it will simply light up like a spot light and then when clicking on the door you would enter in to the information. The main content letting you know was is inside each “room” as you will will be displayed on the door like a poster or or in some different sort of way.

Creating a storyboard 6.1.2, 6.2.1

short-story.png

Whilst looking at this storyboard you can see a few things that it is messing, for example it doesn’t have much text on the board. The only text that is on it is the little sections of writing in the word bubbles. Even though there is little text the drawing has so much detailed the idea and point of the story still comes across.

storyboards_cleanup

Looking at this storyboard there is not many things going for it, the drawing is not great and there is not much discretion from the text. If there was more text then that would be ok and cover the bad imagery but there isn’t. To improve this board there would need to be more text to describe whats going on.

2.1.1, 2.2.1 Research Methods

Capture

7.1.1, 7.1.2 Website Analysis and planning

This website is used to track wind currents that occur on the surface of the earth. It is easy to use, by just scrolling the mouse you can move closer and further away from the globe this meaning you can pin point exact areas of interest. There are many different features on the site so you can personalize it to your own personal preferences, for example you can change the way the wind speed is been measures (MPH, M\S e.g. ). There is only a few limited stranded features within this website for example the box with the information about the earth co-ordinates which is like a navigation bar these make the website usable and interesting . One another level there is some unique features within the website that you can personalize the site to see what you want to see and how you want to see it. You can change the scale that you see the different activities. The media that this site uses is imaging and colour other than this it doesn’t have any other media. The target audience for this site is for people who are interested in whats happening in the world, i think the ma of people who would be using this site will be well educated who can understand the content, therefore they will be of a high class background so your ABC1’S.

http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=0.90,43.39,382/loc=-30.952,50.437

This website is used simply for passing time and entertainment. This site doesn’t really have a purpose. This site doesn’t have any stranded features and has only one unique feature which is choosing the colour your sand is. This site does have some sort of media it has Sound and some interactive forms. The interactive form is you been able to move your mouse and the sand move with you. These two sites are very simpler even though one has a purpose and one doesn’t, there both bland in media and were simply designed to pass time for people, but the next site i analyse  will be more like the one i would like to create.

http://thisissand.com/

Looking at these two websites there are some things that i have learnt about not to put on to the website, some of which are the media that goes on to the site and how it is been used.

Here is another site that i have found on the “awwwards” website and the link is down below. This site has many things that i would like to recreate in my own website it has a unique layout. it uses a film real to with hold the information and the real moves around and then you click on the window and then that takes you to the information. I like how this site uses that media to interact with the audience and particularly to this site that audience would be towards fisherman and people wold like the history of it.

Research Unit 1.1

Here is a link that takes you the BBC website that has some short videos on the recent achohol changes.  With in these videos they use some camera angles that i would like to incorporate in to my short video, one of them is directing the camera straight in to the eyes of the person you are interviewing. Another is the camera just of to there right or left.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/2ymTPC5xpHnXnx2Lbr2yRl5/how-much-is-too-much-alcohol?intc_type=singletheme&intc_location=sportnews&intc_campaign=trustmeimadoctor&intc_linkname=article_alcohol_contentcard3

This is another link that takes you to the Drinkaware website that explains further about the changes, the short video used has some great features again that i would like to use. The lighting is bright and airy and the focus is on the information been given. The one thing that i would like to add to these videos is a humerus side to the changes.

https://www.drinkaware.co.uk/check-the-facts/what-is-alcohol/new-government-alcohol-unit-guidelines

This video has come great camera angles and shots that i would like to recreate when filming my own. Also having the person talking whilst other pieces of footage is playing is a good idea because you match up the worlds to the atmosphere in the place you are filming.

Story sourcing 5.1.2

During the next 6 weeks I will be making a 1 minute radio bulletin to explore audio production technology. The bulletin will include 3 new stories and one will have an interview with in that.

There are the 5 stories that I have short listed to include in the bulletin.

  • A-  Alton Towers to open virtual reality roller coaster. i have placed this at the top of my list because it is a current story and has effected the life’s of people that come from Sheffield. I will try and interview someone involved in the accident, but if this is not possible someone that knows the park and has strong opinions on the matter will be helpful.               bbc.co.uk/news/technology-35290384
  • B – Iphone 7 will reportedly support wireless headphones. I have put this story in second because apple products is such a big thing here in the UK and the new iPhone is bound to be  a hit with the people of Sheffield, many people I know own iPhones including myself and I can see them having a strong opinion on this if I choose to interview.         informationweek.com/…hones/d/d-id/1323831
  • C – Cineworld Sheffield VIP Experience Tickets. I have choose this story because it is happening right here in Sheffield, it is one of only a handful in the country to get an experience like this which people are wanting to see it for them self’s. to get the VIP experience that they wouldn’t normally be able to get to or afford.                                        thestar.co.uk/…/win-cineworld-sheffield-vip-experience-tickets-1-7667823
  • CES 2016: The toilet you only clean once a year. I have selected this story because I feel that it is our future, the idea of making life easier. I will localize this story by taking to people who are used to cleaning and if this product would solve any problems or create any.                                                                                                      bbc.co.uk/news/technology-35258674
  • Meadowhall success is proof HS2 station should be in Sheffield city center.                     thestar.co.uk/…/meadowhall-success-is-proof-hs2-station-should-be-in-sheffield-city-centre-1-7670161

5.1.1 The UK Radio Industry

Commercial Radio

  • On commercial Radios, their main source of income is from selling advertising space.
  • E.G. Capital Radio which is national station, Hallam FM which is a local station.

Non Commercial Radio

  • The main Non Commercial Radio station is the BBC.
  • There main source of income is the licence fee which is about £140 per year, which is paid by every single house hold in the UK.
  • The government designs the BBC’S “Royal charter”, which is the BBC’s remit (the guidelines on what it should be providing to us, the audience.)
  • The BBC is supposedly giving us a combination of education, entertainment and information.

Radio 1 – The remit of Radio 1 is to entertain and engage a broad range of young listeners with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and speech.

Radio 2 – The remit of Radio 2 is to be a distinctive mixed music and speech service, targeted at a broad audience, appealing to all age groups over 35.

Unit 6.1.1 Online news video analysis

Introduction

In this assignment/blog post i will be exploring different online news stories and analyzing the parameters.

Analyse a selection of online news videos

  • Discussing the codes and conventions of news videos (news values, style, pace and language) including narrative structure.
  • Discuss the strength and weaknesses to these clips.
  • Target audience, who they are? Why? What impact do they have?

Narrative structure

Single strand narrative is based on one main storyline. There may be different strands but ultimately, they are linked to the main story strand.

Parallel narrative is where two story strands dominate the structure. These will be completely independent stories running together.

A multistrand narrative is most typically associated with soaps, where several storylines are presented to us simultaneously.

Linear narrative is told in chronological order. The events of the story are presented in natural order.

Nonlinear narrative is when flashbacks are used to tell a story.

Todrov’s Theory – contains three stages

Equilibrium – the scene is set, the problem is established

Disequilibrium – disruption, the problem occurs and the quest to resolve the problem begins.

Resolution – the cause of the problem is dealt with and new equilibrium is reached.

BBC NEWS – A look back at the life of David Bowie, who has died ages 69 – 11/01/16

  • Codes and convention – short and to the point, used to complement the written article, best selected clips which highlight the story.
  • Narrative – in this clip there is no verbal narration in the clip it is all physically written out of us to read on the web page, it was a linear order because it is set in chronological order of his life which is what we expect to see.
  • Style – very formal with a slow pace that reflexes and is appropriate for the reason we are looking at the clip today.
  • Its news worthy because the majority of British and American people knows who he is and was.
  • It was a single strand narrative because it is all focused on him, nobody else.
  • Strengths, the clips highlight his career which lots of us can relate to.
  • Weaknesses, there could have been some narrative to explain more about him and his life.
  • Target audience, any of his fans.

BBC NEWS – Madaya : Desperate wit for aid to besieged Syrian town – 10/01/16

  • There is a narrator over the clip and she was providing us with anchorage for the clip, this was conventional as she was telling us what was happening so that it doesn’t mislead people.
  • It was current and in the present day so it is linear, the narrator was talking about the story as if it was today and right now.
  • Its news worthy because people need to be made aware about it so that something can be done about it.
  • They were showing extreme footage so it can hit home on people and pull on people’s heart strings and one big thing that does this is disturbing images of children which sometimes can be difficult for people to come to terms with.
  • The style is formal which is typical for a new story
  • The pace is fairly slow so that the audience can take time to taking in the information given to them from the story.
  • Been on location shows you what is happening there and how extreme it is.

NEWS ROUND – Everton fan Noah gets special birthday surprise – 10/01/16

  • The story is about a child therefore it will be news value for them.
  • He is disabled therefore he cannot do the things that children can do with a disability.
  • The target audience is going to be aimed at football fans.
  • When it comes to ethical consideration OF-COM is protection all the children on the program as well as the parents promotion on the show.
  • The language in the clip was very simple so that the audience can take in the information and can simply understand the words.

NEWS ROUND –The weeks weirdest news stories– 10/01/16

  • The pace of the story is fairly quick because of the nature of the story which is been covered, which is light heated and soft, both easy to follow.
  • The language is simplistic in order for the young audience to follow and understand.

How does TV broadcasting differ from online news videos

  • it shows breaking news live from the TV broadcasting, unlike online news which could be a few days old unless it is big news.
  • You usually get more detail from online news because it is being put into writing therefore more detail can be said as there is no time limit.
  • In TV broadcasting there is a wider variety of stories unlike online where there is more of a topic.

My own new clip analysis

US snowstorm:  Authorities battle to deal with aftermath.

  • Codes and convention – short and to the point, used to complement the written article, best selected clips which highlight the story.
  • Narrative – in this clip there is no verbal narration in the clip it is all physically written out of us to read on the web page, the voicing was calm even thought it was about a distressing event.
  • Style – Style – very formal with a slow pace that reflexes and is appropriate for the thing that’s happened
  • Its news worthy because it could end up happening to us here in the UK, it also may affect some British people out there trying to get home.
  • Strengths, the clips highlight what is happening over there.
  • Weaknesses, there could have been some narrative to explain more about a specific person to give there story more.
