My Magazine Feature – Jonathan Ive

My personality profile on Jony Ive.

Jonathan Ive the chief designer of Apple is beginning to settle down in to the new role since the death off Steve jobs, best know as the co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc, now going on to the new release of the iPhone 6s.

Before moving to Apple Jony/as he was know by his friends worked at a company called Tangerine who was in the process of creating a PowerBook, Apple had been attempting to recruit him for a full time job in the states for two years without any success but after another year of trying Apple finally managed to get Ive in to the job.

The 47-year-old, born and raised in Essex made the huge step to move to san Francisco to work for one of the largest company’s in the world in 1992, to design the bondi blue iMac G3 which was one of the most iconic PC’s of that age.

Not wanting to stop on his path to the top, he “masterminded the aesthetics of the iPod” both in 2007 and in 2011, this then pushed Jonny to go on and design and utilise the famous click-wheel design.

Now in 2015 the new iPhone are on sale and Jonny has a lot to say about them:

“We’re surrounded by anonymous, poorly made objects. It’s tempting to think it’s because the people who use them don’t care — just like the people who make them

“But what we’ve shown is that people do care

“It’s not just about aesthetics

“They care about things that are thoughtfully conceived and well made

“We make and sell a very, very large number of (hopefully) beautiful, well-made things

“Our success is a victory for purity, integrity — for giving a damn.

Jonny was referring to how the iPhone proved that consumers are not “price-obsessed philistines” but are willing to pay top dollar for products that are well designed.

Apple’s focus on quality over quantity allows the company to snag between 60 and 70 percent of the phone industry.

Jony avoids publicity and stated in March 2014 that Jobs was his “closest friend”, a person he finds it “odd and tough to talk about”, as “it doesn’t feel that long ago that he died”. He goes a head to say that he was an inspiration to Ives and everyone one else at Apple.images

This is the group discussion about the magazine features that we found and how they are going help us write a personality profile.

My Own Rule Of Thirds

newIn this image of mine the main focus is on the model in the centre of the page, as you can see i have cropped the image to fit the criteria so the image is more linked with the rule of thirds. The composition of the model is in the centre and right side third verticlly which does leave the left third a little bland. However horizontally there is a focus in all three thirds, in the lower you have the waist, in the middle you have the neck and torso and in the upper third you have the face. This image is similar to the other images that i talked about in my earlier post because the upper line of thirds is on the model eye line.

IMG_8621In this image the main focus is on the models face which is positioned in the left hand thirdswhich unfortunately does leave the right hand third blander other than the colours of the background. The composition of the model is vertically in the left and middle third, and horizontally she is covering all of the thirds, in the bottom third you have the neck and the chin, in the middle third you have the mouth and nose and in the upper third you have the eyes and the forehead. If i had to improve this image i would either crop the image so all thirds in each sector (vertically or horizontally). This image is similar to the other images that i talked about in my earlier post because the model is covering at least 2 of the thirds either horizontally or vertically.

IMG_8614 (1)In this image the main focus is the model who is positioned in the right and middle third (vertically) because of the way she has this composition the left hand side of the image is left real and a little bland, for other than the background colour. when i comes to the horizontal thirds all three have something in them; in the bottom third you have the chin and the mouth, in the middle third you haven the nose and part of the eyes/glasses and in the upper third you have the remaining section of eye and glasses and then the forehead. i had    to improve this image i  would either crop the photo to make the composition of the model more central or retake the image and shot this instead. This image is similar to the other images that i talked about in my earlier post because even were the model isn’t in the third there is still something there it isn’t completely clear or just a plain black colourless wall.

Screen Shot 2015-09-24 at 19.41.31These are just some of the other photos i have takes with the rule of thirds in mind.

The Rule of Thirds

hamburg-at-night-thirdsThe rule of thirds is a powerful compositional technique for making photos more interesting and dynamic. In this image the main focus is on the buildings and there composition is in the upper two thirds. The other lower third is quite clear other than a change in colour.

ruleofthirdsIn this image the main focus is on the young girl smelling the sunflower, the composition of this is in all three thirds . However vertically the girls eyes are in the the upper third of the image and her nose, mouth, chin and sunflower  positioned in the middle thirds. This does leave the lower third a little bland and not as interesting.

cat-rule-of-thirdsIn this final image the main focus is on the cat pitched on the log, this is positioned in the first and second third vertically to the left, the other third on the right is left slightly bland other than the colour of the trees. horizontally in the all three third there is something, upper there is the cats head, in the middle there is the body and on the lower layer there is the tail and the log its self.

Quotes + My news story 22/09/15

Today we have looked at Direct and Indirect quotes and how they are used in recent new articles:

Direct Quotes –

Funfair owner Robert Wilkinson said the tragedy happened on the final night of the fairground’s four-day stay in Sheldon.

He said: “Those young children came to the fair with their mum to have fun and they left without her. It’s just heartbreaking.

“We are all completely devastated, but I’m so proud of our volunteer first aiders – they brought her back twice and the paramedics said later that they did a marvellous job.”

Indirect Quotes –

The district judge in the case, Tim Pattinson, said at the time that it was “quite staggering” that the charity had spent £330,000 on bringing the case, ten times the defence costs.

Then I went on to use them to write a news article while also including the 5’ws and the 4 Paragraph rule:

An award wining cyclist has suffered multiple injuries after taking part in the climax of this season’s cycle racing event in the county.

Lance Anderson (26) was competing in the Oxshire Road Race Championship which took place yesterday in Oxshire, terrified people watched on as a woman then went ahead and saved his life after she performed resuscitation on the unconscious body.

Oxdown Cycling Club road racer was descending Radcliffe Mount when a car had lost control on the track and continued to hurtle into the cyclist.

Mrs Joanne Pinto (age 54) then said: “It was awful. He was blue and appeared to have stopped breathing.

“But I have had first-aid training. I checked his pulse and administered the kiss of life.”

Mrs Pinto then went on to say that an ambulance arrived within minutes. She later phone St Mary’s Hospital, Oxdown, and was told that Lance was critically ill with multiple injuries – but the resuscitation had saved him.

Mrs Joanne Pinto, of Church Way, Oxdown, was just out for a walk with her sister, Dianne, when Lance overtook and the accident occurred on Radcliffe Mount.

Lance’s wife Pauline, 24, said later: “I can’t thank Mrs Pinto enough for what she did. The doctors are optimistic that Lance will pull through.”

Codes + Conventions of Magazines B

steve-jobs-in-time-magazine-front-coverThe target market for this magazine would be people who are interested in big named celebrities and what they have to say about certain things. As seen on the front cover, the image of Steve Jobs, the image take over the whole page giving the front cover a very sleek and classic look and by having him do a simple smile he seems to be inviting and caring so people what to read it. Also by using this method to displace the image it becomes a very eye catching piece this is mainly because the man on the front is a very well known person but also because of the colours and the composition of the face to the background. By using the colour black and red the editor has added to the piece been eye catching due to these colour been contrasting, the red makes the black stand out and the black makes the red stand out. Another thing that is important about this magazine is that its just Steve Jobs head in the image, this is significant because by doing so it immediately shows the buyer or reader that thats who they wanted to focus on for that weeks issue.

scan00011The target market for this magazine would be for people who are interested in music but also interest in music celebrities and the gossip about them. As you can see the image is of Florence And The Machine but as well as having a large photo of here that covers the whole of the front, there is lots of little pockets of information around the image that gives you sneak previous in to whats going to be in the magazine and what you would be seeing if you went ahead and purchased the magazine. The significance of having the photo the full size of the page is to catch peoples attention and to pull them in to reading it, by having the image like this it gives the front a de-cluttered look, a more sleeker look and feel to the piece. By having Florence holding her face and seeming a little moody it make the person looking at the magazine want to find out why she is been like this. Un-like the front cover with Steve Jobs on which has a black background around his head, this cover with Florence on it has nothing like that because the whole thing is covered and i think they have done this because they want the buyer to think that it is all about her which is different to the other on because the black could indicate that other people can fit in to the magazine.

ST_Travel_CoverThe target market for this magazine would be people who like to know about travel and maybe even traveling. In my eyes the age market for this is for adults who have the money to go to these exotic countries and iconic landmarks. The image used on this front cover paints a picture of been on a luxury holiday with the person you most care about. Plus by having the image the full size of the page thats a very clear statement to accomplish on to the readers mind. Also by using all the same colours and tones it gives the impression that its going to be a very calm and easy thing to flick though and read, it also make the cover look very clean and sleek. The pockets of information about the magazine that have been placed on top of the image in my opinion are the the right amount if anymore it would compromise that imagery that the editor has try and successfully made. Another thing in this photo to increase the imagery is the fact that there are only two people in the pool and though out the whole image and this makes me think, by just looking at the cover, that its very individual and person to you, and by having all that land with no one else in it just multiples that idea of it been personal.

img046The target market for this magazine would be people who are interested in films and the actors in them films. The thing that is interesting in this magazine front cover is that there is information above the mast head, which make me thing that that piece of information is very important and is necessary to have the rights of been up there because that is what they are using to pull people in to purchasing the item and reading it. Also having the mast head in a large bold font in the colour white works well to catch your eye because of the other colours in the cover. The other colours in this cover consist of darker blues and grey, there coronations would be to be quit cold and not very in-bracing towards the reader. On this magazine cover there is lots of pieces of information, these are called cover lines which are used to capture peoples attention and then that makes them want to buy the product to finish reading about the things that they have seen on the cover. The image used is a medium shot  from the waist upwards, the connotations of this image would be that the actor in the photo looks smug, but because he is meant to be Sherlock Holmes who is a renowned genius who knows lots of things, it fits that description well.

What i have learnt today, part 2

-This afternoon i have learnt about how to write catching new stories and what they need to involve. One of these techniques is the 5 w’s which are; who, what, where, when, why. This is some of the work we did;

I’m just Amal’s arm candy, admits George

Who – George Clooney.

What – Joked about been a, “trophy husband”.

Where – The late show.

When – N\A

Why – Because Stephen Colbert asked him whats it like to be arm candy in a relationship.

Mayday! Mayday!

Who – British Airways pilot Chris Henkey.

What – Averted disaster saving 172 lives.

Where – Las Vages international airport.

When – Wednesday 9th September 2015.

Why – The jet’s left engine bust in to flames.

-As well as doing this i looked at how to write intros to new articles and how they effect the people reading them. i learnt that its important to try and not add names, numbers and addresses to the intros, this is because you can add them in to the main chunk of information. This is the intro i wrote for a story on a couple who likes to see them selfs as vampires;

Fanged vampire couple are finally living their dream by ordering a double coffin bed.

Magazine Industry

This morning i was learning about different jobs in the media and what i would like to go on to do after my further education. I chose a radio journalist, which basically involves collecting new from a variety of sources and sharing them with people over the radio. It was really interesting to find out what and were i have to get to do do my dream job.
